Dark spots are the number one skin worry we hear about at our NextGen Mall shop. Old acne marks, patches from the sun, dark knees and underarms, marks left by ingrown hairs – on melanin-rich skin they can hang around for months.
The good news: they do fade. You just need the right ingredients, a little patience (most people see a change in 8–12 weeks), and sunscreen every single day.
Why dark spots happen
When skin is irritated – by a pimple, a scratch, the sun or harsh products – it makes extra melanin to protect itself. That extra pigment is what you see as a dark spot. The ingredients below either slow down that pigment, help skin shed the darkened cells faster, or calm the irritation that started it.
1. Azelaic acid – the all-rounder
Azelaic acid fades marks and calms the breakouts that cause them, so it is a favourite for acne-prone skin. It is gentle enough for most people and can be used morning or night.
Try: Aziderm Gel – Azelaic Acid, from KSh 1,950.
2. Niacinamide – the calm, even-tone helper
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps reduce the transfer of pigment to the skin's surface, strengthens your skin barrier and controls oil. It plays well with almost everything.
Try: Plum 10% Niacinamide Brightening Serum, KSh 2,950, or Balance Active Formula Niacinamide Serum, KSh 2,650.
3. Kojic acid – the targeted brightener
Kojic acid slows down pigment production and works well alongside arbutin and niacinamide.
Try: The Derma Co 2% Kojic Acid Face Serum, from KSh 1,950, or Kojivit Ultra Gel, KSh 2,650.
4. Vitamin C – the morning glow
Vitamin C brightens dullness and gives your sunscreen extra back-up against sun damage. Use it in the morning, under SPF.
Try: Balance Active Formula Vitamin C Brightening Serum, KSh 2,650.
5. Tranexamic acid – for stubborn patches
Tranexamic acid is a newer ingredient that is especially helpful for patchy pigmentation that keeps coming back.
Try: Minimalist Tranexamic 3% Face Serum, KSh 2,650.
6. Thiamidol – the dark-spot specialist
Thiamidol is Eucerin's patented ingredient made specifically for pigmentation, and the day cream comes with SPF built in.
Try: Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector Day Cream SPF30, KSh 4,950.
The step you can't skip: sunscreen
Every one of these ingredients is wasted if your skin meets the sun unprotected – UV light simply darkens the spots again. Wear SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply if you are outdoors.
Our favourite no-white-cast option: The Derma Co 1% Hyaluronic Sunscreen Gel SPF 50, KSh 2,950.

- Start with one new active at a time, every other night for the first two weeks.
- Stop and talk to us if your skin stings, peels a lot or gets red.
